Government Public Digital Library
Public libraries are essential for the intellectual growth of the city, even in today's digital world.
Why so? I see three reasons:
1. Not all have the same facilities - even in the digital age. The pandemic has shown that more than 80% of students either share a phone at home, don't have quality connectivity, or both.
2. Libraries give the environment of knowledge. Surrounded by the tomes, and other serious readers around are compelling. And if the staff is capable and approachable, it is a bonus.
3. Going to the library is an effort, which gives a purpose. And shits off other distractions - leading to better productivity.
Developed nations have always spent efforts and money to build accessible public libraries. Some cities like Kolkata also have a tradition of public libraries, though most of them suffer from congestion, and increasingly have reduced footfalls.
It is great to know that Bengaluru has started taking this as a mission. Thubarahalli Government Public Digital Library, which is part of the Karnataka Digital Public Library initiative (
https://www.karnatakadigitalpubliclibrary.org/) is right next door.
There are around 15 such libraries in Bengaluru and around 400 across the state.
One can download the app from the AppStore and find out one nearest to them. To get complete access, one needs to be a member paying INR 202 for a lifetime (along with a copy of the Aadhar card).
The Thubarahalli facility is a pleasure to visit. Two floors, spacious, well-led out with new furniture, helpful staff, toilets, and tonnes of Kannada books (English nooks are fewer, but I understand more of both languages getting procured).
If there is one near your home, it is worth a visit. It is a great experience.
